✈️ Your First Year of Flying is Exciting and Intense | Crew Briefing

Hello Reader,

Welcome to week two of March. We have officially shifted into longer days, which always feels like a fresh start, even if you are still attached to winter like I am.

March is what I call probation season. Did you know that during your first six months of flying, you are usually on probation? That is the window where you protect your record by staying reliable.

Perfect attendance and on-time performance go a long way. Habits that make professionalism feel automatic.

We are keeping it simple and practical all month.

💡Tip of the Week

Did you know your first six months of flying are usually probation? That window is all about keeping your record as clean as possible. Not perfect. Clean. And one of the fastest ways people get tripped up is attendance.

In your first year of flying, you are adjusting to weird hours, uneven sleep, dry cabin air, constant exposure, and a lifestyle that can feel exciting and intense at the same time. This is exactly why protecting your health is not optional, especially on probation.

One of the biggest traps in your first year is picking up extra trips before your body is ready. I completely understand the temptation, especially on first year pay.

But if you do pick up extra trips, only do it when you are sure you are not extending yourself. Too much flying too fast does not just make you tired. It makes you sick. And sick calls during probation can become career-ending.

So my rule is simple. Work just your schedule at first, without picking up extra trips, guilt-free. Build your stamina and immune system. You will have plenty of time to hustle later. Probation is not later. Probation is now.

Also, carry a travel pharmacy in your tote bag. If you get sick in the middle of a four-day trip, you may not have enough time on your layover to go find what you need. Having basic medicine with you can save you.

And let me tell you, you are not being lazy by resting. You are being professional.

Protecting your health isn’t just for probation; it’s something you will need to do for your entire career, but once you build up your immunity after that first year, it gets so much easier.

Next week, we are going deeper into the sleep and nap strategy that makes the first year of flying so much easier.

Pick of the Week: Travel Diffuser
One of my favorite travel essentials is a small diffuser. It is especially helpful when you are feeling run down, because it can make your hotel room feel more comfortable fast and support the rest you need.

If I am not feeling my best, I use lavender essential oil to help me relax and unwind. And for a quick mood boost, I love orange oil; it is perfect when you want to lift your energy.

Aircraft air can feel stale and dry, so I love bringing a diffuser along. You can even use it in the galley to freshen the space, moisturize the air, and boost the mood, especially on long days.

This one is currently 44% off, and I have it listed in the Travel Pharmacy section of the Future Flight Attendant Storefront HERE.

🎙️Final Boarding Announcement

If you take nothing else from this week, take this. Probation is a short season, but it matters. The goal is not to do everything. The goal is to protect your record while you build your rhythm.

Be intentional with your energy. Be protective of your health. And remember, the habits you build now will carry you for the rest of your career.

If you know anyone who can benefit from this information, you can share it by forwarding this email.

Wheels up!

Hello Reader, If you’re reading this mid-flight, on a layover, or dreaming of the day you will be, welcome back. I’ve been deep in writing mode the last few weeks, racing to finish a book proposal before a June 5th deadline. Last fall, I gifted myself a spot in a prestigious writing program, and it’s a contest for the program participants. If you’ve been around here a while, you know storytelling is kind of my thing. This is book one of a trilogy, and there is a lot of flight attendant stuff...

Hello Reader, Welcome to this week’s Crew Briefing. This week is a reminder that you do not need perfect circumstances to take care of yourself. You just need a few simple habits and a couple of smart tools. Today we are talking about rest, naps, and being comfortable even when the operation is not. Summer is coming, and I don’t need a crystal ball to tell me there will be meltdowns. They seem to happen every single summer at different airlines. 🛫 Who’s Hiring Flight Attendants Allegiant...

Hello Reader, ✈️ Welcome Aboard Welcome to March, one of the most meaningful months in my journey as a flight attendant. Lately, my classmates and I have been celebrating our 20-Year Anniversary, reminiscing about the day we first donned our wings. We started training on January 28, 2006, and I’ll never forget the excitement, and nerves, as we graduated on March 1. That's me on the top right looking out the window of the cabin trainer. Happy 20th Anniversary, 0604! Thinking back, I’m reminded...
