Tip of the Week: What Do I Do If an Airline Doesn’t Have a Base Near My Home?

I get this question a lot, so let’s break it down.

Do you have to move? The short answer is yes and no.

If you are on reserve, you’ll need a place in base or close to it during your reserve days. On your days off, you can go back to your regular home.

Line holders know their schedule a month in advance, which makes commuting a great option. Some flight attendants commute across the country, a few commute from other countries, while others are just a short drive away.

I commuted for years. My longest commute was from Honolulu to Houston and San Francisco, which meant flying six times a month when my kids were little. One of the sweetest perks was picking up at least one layover a month at home.

I could tuck my kids in at night, be there for breakfast in the morning, and then head back out to work. For parents, that flexibility can make all the difference.

I’ve also had shorter commutes, like Myrtle Beach to Newark, and I’ve commuted from several other places and cities over the years.

Each commute had its challenges, but it also gave me the freedom to live where I wanted while still doing the job I loved.

If you live within driving distance (two to three hours), you usually don’t need to move.

If you live farther, many flight attendants get a shared apartment or a crash pad near base.

Of course, the easiest option is to move to your base, and even having a second place in base counts as moving.

Important: In real life, commuting is possible. But in an interview, the correct answer is always yes, I am willing to move.

Commuting takes planning and flexibility, but it can be worth it, especially when it means maximizing your time at home with your family.

Hello Reader, I hope you're having a great week so far. It’s the first week of October, and I have to admit, I’ve been decorating for Halloween all week. I keep my tree out all year, and either decorate it or leave it plain, it saves me time and the effort of packing and unpacking. I’ve done enough packing and unpacking as a flight attendant! I like to look at pretty things that make me feel happy and magical. I might have gotten a little carried away, but fall is my favorite time of year. I...
