Tip of the Week - Stay Eligible

“What happens if you leave your airline while still on probation?”

Here’s the truth, and I want you to know this before you ever step foot into initial training:

During probation, you’re still proving yourself. The company has made a significant financial investment in you; it used to cost around $35,000 to train each new hire, and with inflation, that number could easily have doubled.

Suppose you quit during probation without giving proper notice. In that case, you’ll be ineligible for rehire with that airline (even if you give adequate notice but are still on probation). It can show up on your background check at other airlines. This could significantly limit your future career opportunities in the industry.

Recruiters don’t necessarily “talk,” but those records do follow you. You might get lucky, and it doesn’t appear, but you might not.

Let me share a real-life example. I know someone it happened to. Life was “life-ing,” and this person had to leave their airline before finishing probation, and without giving two weeks’ notice.

As a result, this person was blacklisted by every airline for 10 years.

When that ten-year mark finally passed, this person re-applied and was hired again as a flight attendant at a different airline, but that’s a long time to wait to fly again.

If circumstances force you to leave, remember the importance of professional communication and giving notice. This not only shows respect for the company but also opens up the possibility of discussing solutions.

Even if you have to leave, it's best to do so professionally and with notice. This will not only show your respect for the company but also give you a chance to discuss possible solutions. You may be able to get an emergency drop, or your supervisor may work with you to help you stay.

Even then, it’s best to complete probation before making any significant moves. Your reputation follows you through your background check, so protect it from day one. Completing your probation is a sign of your commitment and responsibility, and it will reflect positively on your professional reputation.

Hello Reader, I hope you're having a great week so far. It’s the first week of October, and I have to admit, I’ve been decorating for Halloween all week. I like to look at pretty things that make me feel happy and magical. I might have gotten a little carried away, but fall is my favorite time of year. I...
